Empirical Study of the Psychological Ownership of mHealth Apps Model for Treatment Adherence to Digital Health Interventions

As mobile health applications become more widespread as part of treatment plans, sometimes even prescribed, the medical and IT communities must now tackle with what it means for patients to adhere to mobile health apps, and to assure it. Countries like Israel and Taiwan with mature mobile health offerings are poised to reap the benefits of such apps, and a recent collaborative work between information systems researchers from Israel and Taiwan has developed a promising model for the Psychological Ownership for mHealth Apps (POMA). But although POMA offers initial explanations of mobile health app adherence, it cannot be fully utilized by medical or IT professionals, nor by policy makers, as it lacks empirical validation.

Objectives: To provide empirical validation of the POMA model for app adherence; Specifically, 1. Determine if psychological ownership of an mHealth app can be instilled through intervention; 2. Identify and quantify correlations between POMA and medically-valid app adherence stages.
