An Optimal Point is not Enough:
The Motivation to Cope with Complex Software Project Planning
The proposed study aims to explore the notion that software project managers do not necessarily choose the optimal Gantt chart when planning a software project. In particular, it aims to examine whether such decisions tend to be biased by the project managers psychological perception of the complexity of Gantt charts and his or her motivation to cope with complex plans (Gantt chart). In contrast to optimal plans used in machine-based industries, where automatic production lines operate according to an optimal point regardless of the complexity of the plan, in software development the “machines” are actually people and, as a result, a complex Gantt chart consists mainly of complex communication and “handshaking” within the development team that might lead to a reduction in the usage of complex plans.
